CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
A hotel is an establishment that provides lodging, paid on a short-term basis. The provision of basic accommodation, in times past, consisting only of a room with a bed, a cupboard, a small table and a washstand has largely been replaced by rooms with modern facilities, including en-suite bathrooms and air conditioning or climate control. Additional common features found in hotel rooms are a telephone, an alarm clock, a television, a safe, a mini-bar with snack foods and drinks, and facilities for making tea and coffee. Luxury features include bathrobes and slippers, a pillow menu, twin-sink vanities, and Jacuzzi bathtubs. Larger hotels may provide additional guest facilities such as a swimming pool, fitness center, business center, childcare, conference facilities, internet facilities and social function services.
On the other hand, Internet has become the world’s largest information network which has the richest information resource. The roles of Internet and Intranet should be taken full advantage of in informatizing the hotel industry. The roles of the network should be taken full advantage of in researching and developing of systems such as room reservation, hotel management, Internet advisory, and etc. All these can have a strong radiating capacity in promoting resource sharing and providing the most advanced information services, greatly improve work efficiency and reduce business costs.
The hotel industry, first and foremost, should realize the intelligentization of internal management, and achieve the full automatization of reservation, rooming, accommodation, discharge, guest market analysis, financial planning. The determination of the target market, competition in the market of guest sources is all guaranteed by high-tech information technology. In order to market the hotel through a variety of channels, expand the market share, and gain a firm foothold in the international market, it is necessary to participate in the international information network, and collect the information of international tourism market.
1.1 Statement of Problem
Although technology is rapidly changing almost at the speed of light, some Hotels are still using manual reservation system to check in/out customers, Hotel facilities, management, share ideas and passing of information, for instance Staff performance assessment, customers rooms are done manually hence providing:
- Ø Providing untimely assessment information’s.
- Ø Consumes a lot of time,
- Ø Waste and use lots of resource such as forms.
1.2. Aims and Objective
The main aim is to develop a Hotel reservation system to replace the paper based Hotel reservation, and also:
- To ease staff and admin with facilities for reservation process.
- To enable sharing of ideas, harmonize and provide timely useful information on how best to enhance performance.
- To ease decision making, save time and resources and utilize opportunities of new technology
1.3 Significance of the System
The significance of this project includes to:
- Encourage adherence to internationally accepted Hotel performance standards.
- Ease reservation and management process.
1.4 Scope and Limitation
This study is limited to the acquisition of data in a certain hotel, including room accommodation rate, room types available, hotel amenities and other offers. The system is expected to accept basic information from clients like name, address, contact number, room type, mode of payment, length of stay and issues a bill or receipt of acknowledgement as for successful logging in. the system will then store the accepted data in a database for future usage.
1.5 Definition of Terms
Online Reservation System: An Internet based system used by hotels that allows prospective hotel guests to check availability and make reservations at the hotel online.
All-Expense Tour: A tour that offers all or most services: meals, lodging, transportation, sight-seeing (etc), for a pre-established price.
However, the terms ‘all-expense’ and ‘all-inclusive’ are normally much misused, as almost no tour rate will cover everything. The terms and conditions of a tour contract should specify exactly what is covered.
All-Suite Hotel: A hotel that features suites, which are larger than the typical hotel room, with a separate living space in addition to the bedroom. A suite may also have a whirlpool or kitchenette.
Affiliated Hotel: A hotel that is a member of a franchise, chain or referral system. Membership usually provides special advantages, such as the use of a national reservation system.
Affiliate Reservation System: A hotel chain’s reservation system in which all participating properties are contractually related.
