DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF A DATABASE SYSTEM FOR A CARGO HANDLING BUSINESS (A CASE STUDY OF UPS ENUGU)

ABSTRACT
The document management system in most Cargo business with no doubt has been a very big difficult task in today’s effective data processing system. This project is to address the problems encountered by the staff of the Un-Interrupted Power Supply and their customers. In view of this problems, the manual process involved in the handling and management of Cargo in the un-interrupted power supply were critically studied and the flows are noted. This project went further to treat the different technique used in implementing the newly designed software. The study and understanding of this work will assist users in the management and handling of cargo effectively and efficiently. It is believed that at the end of this work, user will know the importance of computerized cargo management information system and it is easier in implementing it. This work is conducted towards the computerization of the existing system of processing data in order to identify some various problems that that is being encountered in mechanical aspect of it and the manual method of data processing in the billing of customers good and thereby recommending first class solution to the problem information. This theory also compares the existing system with the new system which is exact and a faster way of processing data and the problem that is face by customers when they are clearing  their goods from the wharf this theory includes with the implementation, programming, test, run, change over the implementation, process of the new system.

CHAPTER ONE
1.0      INTRODUCTION
Computer plays a vital role in the development of any Company, it also solves some of its complex problem faced by man and processed voluminous data within a short period of time.
Recent emphasis on information and data processing in most of our cargo business has grown vastly as in the case of Un-Interrupted Power Supply Enugu than an alternative method has to be mechanical handling of data, preparing of cargo, manifest etc. Un-Interrupted Power Supply is accompanying that handles goods, transport them form one place to other. Computer technology has come to be accepted as an indispensable innovation in cargo system. It is an all purpose machine that accept data as input and process it using a set of information given out result as output, which can be retrieved for future use. And its revolution has been evident in cargo. In order to eliminate most hardship encountered in most of cargo business, the need for the computerization with the design and implementation of a database system for a cargo handling business and its advantage to the cargo business is needed.

1.1   STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
The management of cargo in Nigeria has over the years attracted poor patronage as a result of error that loss of customer’s good is new the order of the day, the reason are not far fetched due to the manually procedure involved. Clients has no other option than to be at the mercy of this error prime procedure and the storage of information such as files and other important document can easily be last thereby attracting distrust of the firm by its client customer as a result of eagerness would prefer there are so many activities involves there will be delay in processing and this does not portray the image of the UPS in a good way.

1.2   AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
The aims and objectives of this study is to develop and implement a computerized cargo database management information system that will make provision of the following;
  • To ensure a fast and more efficient services to the customer based on quick access data and accurate in information. The branch of all routine work which does not demand quantitative consideration do enable them provide better counter service.
  • To be receivable and capable of providing an up to data information relevant to the UPS and their clients.
  • To affect a simpler handling of bill of loading and updating o customers manifest.
  • Check of fraud and other criminal acts which lead to security and control.

1.3   PURPOSE OF STUDY
The existing system of super Un-Interrupted Power Supply agency has exhibited some loop holes and it is against this loop holes that this work was carried out. The study also understanding to produce a system which will address the loops holes and co-operate need of the cargo ups at the smallest possible cost and within the limit of technology available which was the driving force of this project.
1.4      SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
With the computerization of the ups, this biting system will be efficient and reliable. The establishment of the new system will create for a faster and efficient means of transacting business between the cargo ups and the customers. There will be a networked and direct of communication between cargo companies both in and outside the country process like billing daily report generation customer registration will be perform with speed efficiently existing loot in cured.
The information cargoing to the customer and his gods will be secured as they are contained in the computer and there will be case to store and retrieve information to and fro form the computer.

1.5   SCOPE/DELIMITATION
This study is restricted to the full operation of super ups cargo ups Enugu. This research work ended on how the problem of accessing bulky data by the workers can be turned to computer responsibility thereby making process easy the work focused on the super ups cargo Enugu that choose to be the case study here the data I collected are based on the secondary data as well as the ups that attend to customer of the cargo ups.
I also strongly believe that the fact and observation I got from the ups are well reliable for the study to be very successive one.

1.6   LIMITATIONS
During the process of carrying out the study I encountered many problems.
Firstly, it was difficult in a way to get to the staff of different section of the ups to talk about the present state of computerized cargo transportation management information system. Due to the fact of that it were thought to be complicated. Too a lot of stremoius big to make this study a very successful one and also variable.
However, inspite of all these limitation, the study has been able to a large extent achieved the best out of the limited resources.

1.7   ASSUMPTION OF STUDY
I assume that this new system will go a long way to help and improve the work output of my case study. Furthermore, this project will also be of a great importance in the area of data management and information processing.
